Fly fishing with Daddy Cakes®
So like I mentioned the other day – I wouldn’t consider myself a fisherman, but here I am – Mancationing on a fly fishing trip. Well, I had no gear to fly fish so I had to buy some at one of the local fly fishing shops. My friends quickly educated me on the fact that I needed things called “Waders”, Float line & sinking line, leaders & tippets, special boots to go over my waders, fly cases, vest or pouch, 2 pcs poles vs. 4 pc poles, and then the correct fly’s for the area, hatch, level in water, pmd, parachutes, leaches, dry flys…..do you see where this is going.
It was a crash course in fish-ebonics. This wasn’t just putting a worm on a hook or trolling with a lure. It was discovering an art form and like most art this wasn’t going to be cheap. I didn’t have to buy a tube or fins because I was able to borrow my friends old set. By the time I checked out I was looking at close to a $1,000 in the basic essential gear. I felt lucky because the guy helping me gave me the two fishing lines that I needed for free (they were about $50 each!). All said and done, I was ready to catch some fish after spending $738. (Then I find out that I don’t even get to eat them).
